Woodlands Farm is located in the hamlet of Thimbleby, right on the edge of the North York Moors National Park which is one of the largest expanses of heather moorland in the UK. The Moors span an area of just over 500 square miles from the West (Thimbleby) to the Yorkshire coast (Whitby and Scarborough) in the East. We have some great public footpaths just a few yards from our entrance, both lead onto the Moors and offer some fantastic views. Nearby is Thimbleby Shooting Ground offering clay shooting and is open 6 days a week, lessons must be booked in advance (please contact them directly).
We are very fortunate to have the village of Osmotherley just over a mile away from us. There you will find 3 vibrant pubs, The Golden Lion, The Three Tuns and The Queen Catherine. There is also the Tea and Coffee Shop and a handy village shop, called The Top Shop. The village is only a 20 minute walk from Woodlands Farm and is particularly scenic in the Spring and Summer, especially passing through the Ford leading up to the village.
Osmotherley is popular with walkers who pass through when walking the Cleveland Way or the Coast to Coast walk. The Lyke Wake Walk also starts (or finishes!) from the village too. A short walk from the centre of Osmotherley (heading up North End past the Top Shop) you will find Cod Beck Reservoir which is stunning and offers a more gentle, level walk. There is a car park at Sheepwash if you don’t want to walk from the village, only a 5 minute drive from Woodlands Farm.
Mount Grace Priory is only a few miles North of Thimbleby on the A19 and is the best preserved Carthusian priory in Britain. Here you can discover how the monks lived 600 years in the reconstructed monk’s cell and herb plot. It is an English Heritage site and is a great place to go for a picnic.
Our nearest town is the affluent County Town of Northallerton, which is well worth a visit, and includes a branch of the famous Bettys Café Tea Rooms (the queues are much shorter than the Harrogate or York branches!). Northallerton is a true Market town with several independent, family businesses. For the keen foodies, we recommend a visit to Lewis & Coopers Food Emporium and our butchers, Kitson’s on the High Street do some fantastic Yorkshire pork and meat pies. If you’re interested in landscape photography visit The Joe Cornish Gallery on Zetland Street and Barkers Department store on the High Street offers some great shopping.
The market town of Thirsk is 11 miles away and is positioned midway between the stunning North York Moors and the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. Thirsk is renowned for James Herriot, local vet and author. Thirsk is also the home of The Yorkshire Vet TV series on Channel 5, a documentary series following the life in James Herriot’s former practice. You can reach the historic city of York within an hour and the pretty Spa Town of Harrogate.
In short, we believe we’ve something close by for everyone, whether your passion is walking or sightseeing and exploring the wealth of Yorkshire’s history and culture. We have a library of Tourist Information at Woodlands Farm and we are more than happy to assist you with making arrangements to make your stay more enjoyable.
